What action are you taking on the opportunities that are in front of you?
That’s an important question to ask yourself, as no person can guarantee you tomorrow and yesterday is too late.
Leadership author John Maxwell puts it this way: “Opportunities do not multiply because they are seen. They multiply because they are seized.”
Within this context, going from seeing to seizing opportunities is not an overnight task. Time is needed to train yourself to anticipate opportunities and live with urgency for today. Here are a few thoughts on how to spot significant opportunities:
- Step up when someone around you needs help;
- Look for opportunities where the potential for significance is high, even if this involves stepping out of your comfort zone; and
- Always pursue what is right, and opportunities will present themselves for the seizing. Today you have the opportunity to be an agent of transformation inside of your sphere of influence: in your family, your organization, your neighborhood, your city, your country.
Here are three questions you can ask yourself right now (and you may want to answer on paper, as that would make it more likely that you’ll take action):
- What significant opportunities do I see that others don’t?
- What am I willing to say that others are afraid to say?
- What am I willing to do that others are afraid to do?
Opportunities are before you. This is the right moment. It’s up to you whether you’ll take the first step. What’s the one step you can take today?
