Once you’ve pivoted, or even while you are considering it, there is a fundamental choice we all face: Do we prioritize security, or do we embrace adventure?
I recently sat down with Doru Gordan, the owner of Complete Flooring Inc. While his business is in the construction industry, his philosophy is one that resonates regardless of your profession.
Doru’s path wasn’t linear. He was born in Romania and graduated with a degree in political science. When he moved to Canada in 2006, he didn’t look for a job in his field of study. Instead, he looked for a trade he could master.
He realized that personal agency starts with having a skill that provides value directly to others. But as he grew his business, he began training his employees and some of them become his competition.
In many corporate environments, we are taught to guard our “secrets” and protect our positions. Doru, on the other hand, views training and mentorship of staff as a duty. By training young people, he isn’t just installing floors; he’s building a more competitive and more affordable community for everyone.
During our conversation, Doru shared a perspective that stuck with me:
“The biggest challenge for anyone… is to overcome the fear of starting. You are weighing two principles: security versus adventure.”
This isn’t just about starting a company; it’s about:
