Lesson 19: Your Vote Matters

April 23, 2025 by Alex Rășcanu Leave a Comment

Good morning,

Your vote is not just a right; it’s an opportunity to shape the future of Canada.

The federal election, which is set to take place on April 28, sees Canada’s political parties face off in 343 ridings (including five new electoral districts).

As Canadians, we are given the rare privilege to have our voices heard through our vote. If and when we don’t exercise that power, policies and decisions end up not reflecting the needs of the people. When we choose not to vote, we give away the opportunity to influence the direction of our community, province, and country.

📜 Did you know? In the 2021 federal election, only 62.5% of eligible voters cast a ballot. The absence of many voices meant that some key perspectives were underrepresented.

When we vote, we ensure that the policies we care about — from housing to local manufacturing and food production to healthcare to taxation to public safety — are prioritized. But when we don’t, we allow others to decide for us.

✅ 3 Ways You Can Make a Difference Before April 28th:

  1. Make a Voting Plan
Don’t leave it to the last minute. Find out where and when you can vote, and set aside time in your schedule.

  2. Encourage Others to Vote
Help others cast their ballots, if you know anyone who needs help with this. Whether it’s a ride for someone who can’t get to the polling station or reminding your friends, family, and colleagues to vote, every vote counts.
📜 Once you vote, you may choose to share on your social media profiles a photo and a message that you’ve done so in order to encourage others to do the same.

  3. Know What Matters to You
You may (or may not) want to dive into every public policy detail. You can ask yourself though: what are the 2–3 key issues that matter most to me? From housing to employment to public safety, find out where the major parties stand on those issues.
💻 Use tools like the Vote Compass to compare the political parties’ policies.

The upcoming federal election is our chance to ensure that our voices are heard. Voting isn’t just about choosing a party; it’s about choosing the future we want for ourselves, our families, and our communities.

This April 28th, use your power. Vote.

Thank you so much!

P.S. I’ve got a couple of #ExperienceTO historical tours (Swansea and High Park) and a Jane Walk (Bloor West Village) coming up. If you’re looking to get offline and reconnect with the city – and catch up – it’d be great to see you there.
