Good morning,
This week’s lesson comes from the legendary urbanist Jane Jacobs, whose ideas challenged the way we think about cities, communities, and public spaces.
Through her influential writing, such as The Economy of Cities, and her life’s work as profiled in Eyes on the Street, Jacobs showed that vibrant, safe, and economically dynamic cities are built by the people who live in them, not just by planners and developers.
Her concept of “eyes on the street” teaches that when people are actively present in their neighborhoods – walking, shopping, socializing – they create safer, more resilient communities. It’s a reminder that our everyday presence and participation matter.
Lesson:
Pay attention to your surroundings and participate. Strong communities aren’t built from the top down; they’re nurtured from the ground up by engaged residents.
Here are three ways you can put this into action this week:
- Join a Jane’s Walk!
I’m co-facilitating a Jane’s Walk in Bloor West Village on May 3rd at 10:30 a.m. and again at 2:00 p.m. It’s a great opportunity to experience Jacobs’ ideas in action and connect with others who care about vibrant neighborhoods.
➡️ Sign up here.
- Take a purposeful walk in your own neighborhood.
Notice how people use the space. Where do you feel safe, energized, or inspired? Where do you see opportunities for improvement? Reflection leads to action.
- Support local initiatives that build community life.
Attend a town hall meeting, volunteer with a local group, or simply strike up a conversation with a neighbor. Community engagement strengthens the “social infrastructure” Jane Jacobs valued so deeply.
Closing thought:
Jane Jacobs wrote in The Death and Life of Great American Cities that “Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.”
Let’s participate, observe, and help shape the communities we want to see.
Have a great rest of the week,
Alex Rășcanu
P.S. I’ve got a couple of #ExperienceTO historical tours (Swansea and High Park) and a walk (Experience The Beach) coming up. If you’re looking to get offline and reconnect with the city, and catch up, it would be great to see you there.
